A favorite page of mine from our new reader, A Little Time for Myself, is the entry for March 29, on page 89. “Today’s Reminder,” “The skills I learned as a child served a purpose then, but as an adult I need to re-evaluate them and create new ones that serve me now,” is particularly meaningful to me. One of my most deeply-rooted childhood survival mechanisms is perfectionism. My Father, while not an alcoholic, was abusive verbally and emotionally, and to a certain extent, physically. As a child and adolescent, I found that the only way to avoid his wrath… Read more »
My favorite two pages (so far) in A Little Time for Myself are pp. 247 and 333. The first one talks about how to know my HP’s will for me. One of the greatest gifts Al-Anon has given me is the four italicized words “as we understood Him.” If I had been told what or how to believe in a Higher Power, I likely would not have stayed in Al-Anon. As I have developed my understanding and experience of a Higher Power, I have learned that this power takes many forms, some conforming to traditional icons of certain religions, some… Read more »
My favorite pages in A Little Time for Myself are December 29, 30, and 31 (pp. 364-366). As a group, these readings summarize the actions and attitudes that create turmoil in our lives and the Al-Anon tools that we can use to stop unhealthy patterns. Obsessive thinking, willfulness, and resistance to change are ways we make life harder for ourselves. The last three pages of the year in A Little Time for Myself provide the wisdom to help us quiet the chaos and instead grow in serenity.
I love all the Daily readers as each one has its colour, its style, and addresses many subjects, that although being similar, offer different perspectives. All of them have greatly helped me in my recovery. The new Daily reader: A Little Time for Myself (B-34) also has a different colour with its presentation in a great variety of topics, its openness in addressing many subjects not necessarily visited before, the diversity of its members/topics and the respectful approach in all of that. I love this book that opens my mind to subjects I had never considered before. The diversity of… Read more »
It will take me more than a little time for the new Daily Reader to sink in if my experience with the previous readers is any guide. There are pages in ODAT, Courage To Change, or Hope for Today that I’ve read many times, yet there always seems to be fresh insight in those pages, every time I read them. But for now, I am just going to read A Little Time for Myself each day as it comes. Today (March 6) is a good day, and I like the rock-climbing analogy. One step, one handhold at a time gets… Read more »
